Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling The House?

An AC often runs but doesn’t cool when airflow is restricted, refrigerant is low, controls are mis-set, or the compressor can’t move heat outside. The most common cause is a clogged air filter that chokes airflow and lets the coil freeze, so the system blows warm. Other times the outdoor coil is packed with yard debris, the thermostat is on “fan” instead of “cool,” or a failing capacitor keeps the compressor from starting. If the outdoor fan spins but the compressor is quiet, the system can’t reject heat, so temperatures won’t drop. We service homes across the Treasure Valley, including Caldwell, and offer 24/7 emergency HVAC help when cooling stops completely.

Before you call, try these quick checks:

  • Set thermostat to cool and auto, then lower the setpoint.
  • Replace the 1-inch filter and open closed supply vents.
  • Gently clear leaves and lint from the outdoor coil.
  • If you see ice on lines or smell burning, shut the system off and call a technician.

If warm air continues after these steps, schedule a diagnostic to prevent compressor damage.
